Pink bunny hat on the ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A flat-coloured cartoon tattoo of a pink knitted hat with two long bunny ears and a darker pink inner area, outlined in black. The bold outline and simple shading give it a clean, graphic look. It sits centrally on the ankle against a dark leather seat background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie had knitted the hat over a wet February, pink wool left over from a jumper nobody wanted, and she posted it to the Grace Abounding with a note: the ears are not decorative. Nobody aboard understood that until the fog came down over Hungerford Wharf.

Dennis, who steered the narrowboat because he was the only one who could reverse it, pulled the hat on and climbed onto the roof. Visibility was a grey wall. Bernadette Pike, who owned the Grace and most of her opinions, shouted that a grown man in a bunny hat would drown them all, but she didn't stop him. The ears stood up above the cabin, two pink points in the mist, and somewhere out on the water a hire boat's engine note slowed.

Marjorie had stitched a length of copper wire through each tip, so the ears could be bent and would hold their shape. Dennis bent the left one toward the lock gate and the right one toward the bridge. The hire boat answered with a horn, two short blasts and then one long. A man on the far bank laughed and called out that it was the first sensible thing he'd seen all day.

By dusk the fog had lifted and the hat hung from the tiller, damp and absurd. Bernadette took it down, turned it over, and found Marjorie's note tucked into the lining: Still the best thing I've made. Keep it dry. She hung it on the hook beside the kettle and said nothing, which on the Grace Abounding was as good as a medal.
