Two cats seen from behind on the ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two cats are shown from behind, standing side by side with their tails hanging down, and a thin horizontal line runs above them. The cats are rendered as solid black silhouettes with patches left as bare skin, and their ears and outlines are defined with fine dark linework. The tattoo is small and centred on a close crop of the ribs, with a striped sleeve visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the yard pump again by six, so I broke the skin of ice on the trough with the heel of my boot and counted the cats the way Dad taught me, from behind, because they never sit still long enough to be counted from the front. Pepper and Smudge had claimed the fence post by the milking parlour since the first hard week in December. They sat with their tails hanging down, the way cats do when they are thinking something through, and stared up at the single wire that ran from the parlour roof to the ash tree at the lane. Nothing ever crossed it except the odd blackbird and, on Tuesdays, the post van's bell.

Dad used to say the wire hummed when the weather was turning. I never once heard it hum. Then one morning after the thaw, a row of starlings lifted off it all at once, and the cats did not flinch. They only leaned, both of them, towards the lane, as if they had been promised a letter. The van came at ten. Nothing for us, only a feed invoice and a seed catalogue Mum had been waiting for since October. I stood in the gateway with my hands jammed in my coat and felt foolish for hoping.

Pepper hopped down, walked the length of the post, and sat again underneath the wire with her face tipped up. Smudge followed without being asked. I thought, well, somebody on this farm is still expecting something, and that is more than I can say for the rest of us. I went back to the parlour and left the gate open so they could come in when they were ready.
