Two hands with small finger tattoos on wood
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a cracked, weathered wooden log slice, one from a sleeved arm on the left and one on the right. Each hand shows a small tattoo on a finger, rendered in black ink with simple linework. The image is warm in tone with soft natural light and a shallow focus that keeps the hands and wood sharp.

Sit yourself down on the bench, love, and mind the gull, he has been eyeing your chips since you came up the path. You want the story of that log? Everyone on this rock wants that log. It came in after the Michaelmas gale, forty feet of oak with its roots still knotted at one end, and it fetched up on the rocks below the light as if it had an appointment.

Abel Reeve was keeper then, and his daughter Nell kept the lamp trimmed better than any man on the coast. The two of them rowed out in the dinghy with a bow saw and a bottle of rum neither of them drank, and they cut a slice from the thick end, where the heart had split open like a dry riverbed. It took both of them to haul it up the cliff steps. Nell wouldn't let him take the last flight. She had pricked a little knot of ink onto her ring finger that spring, using a darning needle and soot, and she said a keeper's girl did not need carrying up her own stairs.
That night Abel sat by the candle with a pin and counted the rings on the slice, two hundred and eleven of them, each one a summer or a hard winter the tree had lived through. He got to the outer ring and stopped, because the grain there was wet-dark and tight, and he knew without asking that the tree had been bent by the same gale that had brought it to them. Nell came in from the gallery, cold to the bone, and pressed her hand flat on the wood the way you'd check a loaf.
It was still warm from the day's sun. Abel laid his hand over hers, and the two of them sat there while the lamp went round above their heads, one slow turn after another, the way the rings had gone round all those years. Neither of them said that a thing could be battered and still hold.
