Small finger tattoos on two hands

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest on a cracked, pale wooden tree stump, with the fingers of one hand overlapping the other. Each visible ring finger carries a small tattoo in black ink, with a simple interlaced or knot-like design. The image is softly lit with warm, muted tones, and the wood grain and tattoos form the main points of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

When the Mercer Brothers Travelling Show lost its elephant to a farmer in Shropshire and its band to a wedding in Ludlow, only two performers were left who would still walk the high wire together. Nell Ashdown and Tom Quill had been bound to each other since the winter the big top sagged under sleet and they held it up with their bare shoulders until the men came with poles. That night they tied a knot in spare rope and swore it would hold as long as the show did. In the spring a tattooist in Hereford inked the same knot on the ring finger of each of them, small and black, so the promise would not wear off in the wash.

The show went on getting smaller. By the third autumn they were pitching in a field behind a shut public house, with one lamp and a cracked ash stump where the centre pole had stood. Nell said the knot was the only contract they still kept. Tom said a knot was just rope that had been asked nicely. They argued most evenings, and most evenings they sat with their hands flat on the wood, because it held the day's warmth and kept their fingers from shaking.

That spring the wire frayed and Tom fell, not far, and broke nothing but his pride. Nell sat with him in the wet grass and would not let him stand until he admitted what he was afraid of. He said the knot would hold him forever whether he wanted it to or not. She laughed, then cried, then pressed her inked finger against his until the two marks touched.

The Mercer Brothers did not travel the next season. Moss grew over the stump, then a green shoot from its rings, and the field was called the Quill field ever after.
