Two matching cartoon creatures on forearms
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two cartoon-style animal characters are tattooed on separate forearms, one in purple and one in orange. Both have bold dark outlines, simple cel-style shading and pale highlights, and each figure is shown in a playful, mid-motion pose. The two arms sit close together against a dark background, so the matching pair reads as one composition.

You have been told twice already that the drawbridge at Harrowmere is no place for cats, and yet here you are, flattened against the cold stones of the gatehouse with your tail hooked round a loose corbel, watching the kitchen window below. The purple one, Mavis, has been dangling by her back legs from the ivy for ten minutes, muttering that the cook always leaves the mackerel on the sill to cool. You told her it was a trap. She told you that you were a coward. Mostly she is right about the mackerel.

The wind comes off the moat smelling of weed and old iron, and the ruin groans around you like a becalmed ship. Somewhere in the chapel a bell that nobody has rung since the siege gives one flat note. You chase a loose slate down the broken staircase, and by the time you reach the kitchen Mavis is already at the window, one paw in the flour bin, pretending not to see you.
Then the cook throws open the shutters, and the two of you freeze in the exact pose you have practised for years, half climbing, half falling, the sort of shape that makes a grown woman shriek and then laugh. The mackerel slides off the sill. You both catch it in midair, tangle, and tumble down into the nettles together, the fish held between you like a prize neither will surrender.
Mavis licks her whiskers and says the fish was hers all along. You let her have the head. You always do.
