Two pandas and a green ribbon on the ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon pandas sit facing away from each other in black outline with solid black patches, and a green awareness ribbon is placed between them. The linework is simple and bold with flat black fills on the pandas and a softer, shaded green ribbon, with a thin black shadow line beneath each panda. The design is centred on the inside of the lower leg, shot in daylight with a blurred background.

They would not look at each other. Tobias the carter swore they had fallen out over a bamboo shoot, and the children made bets on which one would turn first. Each morning they sat back to back in the sun, black arms folded, their shadows laid out on the dry mud like two half-moons that never quite touched.
In August a storm brought the stream up over the lower path. Mabel went out at dusk with a lantern, expecting to find the ribbon torn and the stone empty. Instead the pandas were standing in the water to their knees, one facing upstream and one facing down, each watching the side the other could not see, passing a length of bamboo between them to test the depth.
She understood then why they never turned round. She stood on the bank with the lantern until the water dropped, and when the carters came in the morning the two shadows were lying on the stone again, close together, the ribbon fluttering between them like a flag nobody had needed to raise.
