Colour tattoo on a limb showing two dark silhouetted figures against a rainbow and orange sunset inside an outline shape, with an ALLONS-Y banner below.

Two silhouettes, rainbow and sunset with banner

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two dark silhouetted figures standing side by side, set within a large outlined shape that frames a rainbow and a sunset. A banner beneath the scene reads ALLONS-Y in black lettering. The sunset uses blended orange, red and yellow shading, while the figures, outline and banner are solid black, and the composition is centred on the limb with another tattoo partly visible at the top right.

The bus pulls away from Esperanza Flats with the back door still swinging, and you are the only one who turns round to watch the water tower go. Nobody on the road to Carrow Wells has ever been able to tell you what the rainbow over that town is made of. Dust, Ada says. Light bent through dust. She has said it since you were nine, and she is still the only person who has ever made you laugh on a bus.

Halfway to the border the driver stops for a goat. You step down to stretch your legs onto a road so straight it seems to be leaving the earth behind. The sun is sinking behind a line of mesas, going the colour of marmalade, then tomato, then the pale yellow of a cracked plate. Ada stands beside you with her hands in her coat pockets, though it is thirty-one degrees. Neither of you says anything for a while.

Then she says it, the word she borrowed from a programme neither of you has ever seen the end of: Allons-y. Let's go. She says it the way you would call a dog in from a field, and the driver leans on his horn, and the two of you climb back up the step without touching the rail. Behind you the rainbow lifts off the scrub like a bridge somebody forgot to finish.

Twenty miles on, the road runs out of shade and you realise you have been holding her hand since the goat. You don't let go. You never planned to. The shadows of two people stretch long across the tarmac ahead of the bus, and for once you do not look back at the water tower at all.
