Two small rabbit tattoos beside a quarter

Colour · Photo

The top panel shows a small brown rabbit in a leaping pose, outlined and shaded with soft tonal areas, beside a silver coin for scale. The bottom panel shows a larger rabbit with a brown body, yellow spots, pink inner ears and a dark outline, held beside a gold-coloured coin. Both designs are set against plain skin on a neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Scarrow Fold could remember the last time the Harrowby Travelling Show had filled its benches, so when the speckled rabbit still leapt for its supper, old Tobiah Wren counted it a small miracle. The rabbit was brown as wet bracken, with yellow spots the children swore came out in the rain, and every evening it cleared the painted hoop for a single coin dropped into its water tin.

The money was going the way of the canvas. Patches showed through the big top like pale moons, and the old lion had died in the spring. Tobiah's daughter Ada kept the accounts on the back of a seed packet and told him there was enough for one more winter, provided the rabbit kept its appetite and the rain kept off.

One October night the rain did not keep off. The ring flooded, the crowd went home without their pennies, and Tobiah sat alone with the rabbit in its wicker box, a sixpence warm in his palm. He lifted the lid and the rabbit did not jump. It sat up, looked at the coin, then at the torn flap of the tent, and bolted across the wet grass into the dark where the hedges began.

Ada found the tin still full in the morning. Years later, carters on the Ledger road said a spotted rabbit kept company with the wild ones along the ditches, and that it would take a coin from any child who held one out flat on the palm. Then it would stop at the top of the stile and wait there, as if still expecting the applause.
