Gather round, gather round, and mind the rope, because the ground under this tent has been walked on by better liars than me. Sit yourselves down on the trunks. Old Tobias Quaine ran it. He kept the ribbon oiled and his cigarette tin full of pennies, and he never once read a card before he handed it over. That was the rule. A girl called Marigold Pike, who sold toffee apples by the dodgems, came in every Saturday with a penny in her glove and a question she would not say aloud. Every Saturday the keys clattered, a card slid out, and she read it, folded it small, and laughed like someone had caught her out.

One October the wind took the big top down in the night and the whole fair scattered across three counties. Tobias came back to Marigold's caravan with the machine strapped to a handcart and set it on her step. "Go on," he said. "Ask it properly, just the once." She sat, she typed, and the card that came out was the last one anyone saw him hand over. It read, in plain capitals: WE ARE ALL FOOLS IN LOVE. Marigold kept it. The fair never saw Tobias again, and the card, I'm told, is still in her purse, soft as cloth.
