The grille had a dent in it from the Tuesday Frankie dropped the mic off the riser at the Palais, and Ruth Pryce would not let anyone straighten it. 'The sound lives in those holes,' she said, 'and so does the bruise.' She ran the Sunday night session at Halden Road for eleven years, and the control room smelled of hot valves and Woodbines and the roses Eddie Coyle brought from the market every Friday. He tied them to the mic stand with garden string because he said a voice ought to have something to look at while it worked.

The night the tape machine ate the reel, the room went quiet except for the hum. A girl in a borrowed coat, with nothing to lose and a verse she had written on the bus, stepped into the light where the grille caught it. Ruth turned the dial down to nothing and listened. Eddie stopped stacking chairs. Nobody breathed in the control room for the length of the chorus, and when it ended, a petal from the bigger rose had come loose and lay on the floor like a dropped coin.

Ruth wrote the take on the sleeve in pencil: first take, no safety, one petal lost. The girl never came back, and nobody at Halden Road ever learned her name. But the record pressed that spring had her chorus on side two, the crackle at the start left in on purpose. Ruth said the microphone had caught her breathing, and that was the only part worth keeping.
