Wanderlust lettering study sheet
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of paper pinned to a board shows the word Wanderlust repeated in a dozen or so lettering styles, from fine flowing scripts to heavy bold letterforms. The strokes are solid black on white, with varied weights, slants and flourishes down the page. Fragments of other photographs and a red pin appear at the edges of the sheet.

Dear Tom,

The gate sign at Ravensholm is finally going up, and I have spent three evenings in the gatehouse with a lamp and a box of nibs trying to decide how to say Wanderlust on a board the weather will eat in ten years. The council wanted something plain. Mrs Gorse from the trust wanted something that would make the coach parties slow down. I have pinned twelve versions to the cork board above the trestle, so the damp can have a go at all of them at once.
The bold ones look shouted, which is no good for a place that has been quiet since 1643. The flowing ones look like they were written by someone who was going to be late for supper. I kept coming back to the thin one at the bottom, the hairline script that nearly vanishes into the paper. You have to lean in to read it, and once you do you cannot unsee it. Mrs Gorse thinks it will be lost in sunlight.
Last night a draught came through the arrow slit and lifted the sheet, the red pin slipped, and behind it I found the corner of an old postcard showing the keep from before the roof fell in. Someone had written on the back in pencil: Gone on ahead, will catch up. I have no idea who. I have decided it is not my business to know.
So the board will carry the faint one, cut shallow with a V-gouge, and I will charge the trust for the extra hours of squinting. Come and see it when you're back from the coast. Bring the boots with the hole in the left toe.
Your loving sister, Nell
