Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows a mountain range outline with the word Wanderlust written in a flowing script beneath it. The mountain peaks use fine, slightly feathered linework with soft grey shading on the ridges, while the lettering is bold and smooth. The image is taken from a close angle with a strappy sandal and a dark floor in the background.

Marta had kneaded the dough for the third time before the bell at the crossroads rang five, and still the hills outside the window were only hills. Her mother said the mountains were where the sky went to sleep, and that a girl who stared at them too long would find her feet itching by harvest. Marta's feet had itched since she was seven.

Every morning before dawn she shaped the loaves at the long oak table, and every morning she pressed a thumb into the crust of the rye and drew a ridge, a peak, a jag of teeth, the way the far range looked when the light came off the snow. Her mother sold them as ordinary bread. The carters said the bakery's loaves tasted of cold air.

One February a pedlar came through with a sack of walking boots and a map with no names on it. He ate two of Marta's rolls standing up, looked at the thumbprint ridges, and said that bread shaped like the high passes would carry a person over them if it was wrapped and carried right. She didn't believe him. She tied six loaves in a cloth anyway, pulled on her mother's boots, and went up the road in the dark with the bundle warm against her ribs.

She reached the first col at sunrise and it was only a gap full of wind. But when she broke a roll open the crumb had set in the shape of a path, and the path ran on ahead of her over the next ridge and the one after, where a line of footprints was already pressed into the snow, waiting to be followed.
