Black ink fine line tattoo on a person's upper back and shoulder, showing the word Wanderlust in script above a mountain outline with a small line of text beneath.

Wanderlust script and mountain line on shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads Wanderlust in flowing black script, with a thin black mountain outline rising behind the lettering. A smaller line of capitalised text beneath reads having no destination, I am never lost. The linework is crisp and even, the image is in black ink only, and the design sits across the shoulder blade with the bare skin and a dark top framing it.

The last survey drone had gone quiet above the Hesk Range three days before, and Ilse Varga stood at the edge of the drift-camp with grit in her boots, waiting for the relay to chime. Nobody on Coldharbour said map any more. They said line, as in the line a ridge drew against the sky, and a line was only worth something if somebody had walked it.

Her grandfather had walked most of them. His field book sat in her pack, its cover soft as cloth, and on the inside page he had written a sentence in pencil beneath a rough sketch of peaks: having no destination, I am never lost. She had always taken it for bravado. Now, with the relay silent and the wind pushing grit against the tent, it read more like a set of instructions she had failed to follow.

She went up at first light with two water bladders, a compass that still believed in north, and the drone's last coordinates scratched on the back of her wrist. The col was narrower than the chart promised. Halfway up she found the drone sitting on a shelf of black rock, its rotors folded like the wings of a bird that had decided to stop. Its memory was intact. The final frame showed no crash, only a ridge she did not recognise, climbing clean and unmarked into cloud.

She sat with the screen on her knee until the cold made her fingers clumsy. Then she unclipped the pencil from her notebook, drew the new peak in a loose sweep, and wrote the name nobody had given it yet. Below that, in smaller letters, she added her grandfather's line. When she stood, the wind came from every direction at once, and for the first time in years it felt less like being lost than like being somewhere.
