Wanderlust script with an arrow
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo shows the word Wanderlust in flowing cursive script, with an arrow running through the word from left to right. The arrow has a feathered tail, a striped fletching and a small dotted trail at each end. The photograph is black and white, with the ink appearing as clean dark grey-black lines on pale skin.

Old Sabine Harrow kept her bow hung over the caravan door, though she had not drawn it since the fair left Cumbria in the wet spring. The arrows she made for the sideshow were for show only, their shafts painted with spirals and their fletching cut from pigeon feathers that the boy collected behind the cattle pens.

When the fair came to Ledbury that autumn, a girl named Tilly Mabb came to the tent with a coin in her fist and asked for a true arrow. Sabine asked where she meant to go. Tilly said she did not know, only that she could not stay in one town, that the high streets felt like a pen. Sabine took the coin back and gave her a shaft of ash, striped at the nock, and told her to wind thread along the tail and mark her path with dots, the way the old carters did on their maps.
Tilly walked out at dawn with the arrow over her shoulder. She sent postcards from Galway, from Bergen, from a harbour where the gulls were the size of dogs. Each one had a dotted line drawn across the back, starting at the Ledbury postmark and ending wherever she stood. Sabine pinned them above the bow and read them aloud to the boy, who was getting too old for feathers.
The last card came in a damp envelope with no stamp at all. It bore only one word, written large and slanting the way Tilly had always written, with an arrow running clean through it. Underneath she had added a single line: The arrow does not stop at the end of the ink. Sabine laughed until she had to sit down on the step.
