You'll laugh at this, but the woman at the Harwich shed took one look at the card in my bag and held it up to the light like it was a forged banknote. Four pineapples, she said, the wrong sort of fruit for a Dutch crate. I told her they were only transfers, the sort you press on your wrist for a summer fête and peel off by teatime. She didn't believe me until I rubbed my thumb across the green crown and it smudged, a little colour coming away on the skin like a bruise that wasn't sure of itself.

Mum bought the set off a stall in Margate in July, the man swearing they'd last a week if you kept them out of the sea. The turquoise one with the pink crown is the one I keep looking at. Its body is all little diamonds broken up with dots, as if someone tried to fit a disco ball inside a fruit and gave up halfway.

Anyway, she let the card through once I'd signed her form twice. She said it was the most cheerful thing to cross her desk all month, and then she stamped it, which I suppose made it official.

I'm sending you one of the green ones. Put it on the back of your hand on your next night shift and see how long the crown lasts. If the captain asks, tell him the pineapple has been inspected and found harmless.
