The ring had gone missing twenty minutes before the vows, and Hannah swore on her mother's Bible that the cat had it. Everyone in the chapel turned to look at Mab, who sat on the front pew as white as a laundered sheet, one eye the colour of strong tea and the other the blue of the bay at Whitby on a cold morning. She tilted her head at us all, the way she always did when she was listening for something she didn't trust. The bell under her chin said nothing. She had stopped it with a wad of wool three days before, because a bell is a poor thing to own when you are a hunter.
