White cat with a pink ribbon on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small cat head in profile glances sideways, drawn in thin black outline with a pink nose, pink inner ears and a pink ribbon bow tied at the neck. The cat has one blue eye and one yellow eye, and the fill is mostly left as bare skin with only soft colour accents. The design sits centred on the inner forearm against a pale background of light wooden boards.

Late August in the orchard at Hollins Farm, and the windfalls were already soft in the long grass. Mrs Pyle paid me a penny a basket to gather them before the wasps got there, and my only company was Miss Pimm, a white cat with one blue eye and one yellow, who had come with the farm the way the ladders had.

She never helped. She sat on the lowest wall with her head turned sideways, as if she had heard a better offer somewhere over the hedge. Every morning she wore the same pink ribbon at her throat, tied by Mrs Pyle in a bow that the cat worked loose each night and that Mrs Pyle retied at dawn. Nobody could say which of them was winning.
The last week of August the gale came early and brought down the old Bramley. I found Miss Pimm under its split trunk, ribbon soaked through, but she would not come out until I had gathered every apple that had rolled into the nettles. Then she walked ahead of me up the lane with her tail high, looking back once over her shoulder, as if I had been slow to notice what mattered.
That evening Mrs Pyle counted the baskets and paid me in coppers. I bought a second ribbon at the village shop, pink like the first, and tied it on the cat myself. She let me, which was the nearest thing to thanks the farm ever gave anyone.
