Winged bird and feathered eye on feet
Other · Mixed · Photo
The left image shows a small black and grey tattoo of a bird with outstretched wings on the top of a foot, drawn with fine outlines and light grey shading. The right image shows a larger colour tattoo of an eye framed by teal feather-like patterns, with orange, red and yellow tones around the iris and dark shading in the feathers. Both are photographed against plain backgrounds with painted black toenails visible.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the pegs, because the big top has been folded since the spring and the ground still remembers where it stood. You want the one about the bird? Right. Old Mr Halloran kept a grey kestrel called Tuesday, and she could fly the length of the ring with a silk ribbon in her talons and drop it into a child's lap without once touching the sawdust. Those were the good years, when the tent smelled of hot sugar and elephant and the band still had all its teeth.

By the autumn the crowds had thinned to a few farmers' wives and a man who only came for the trapeze. The show couldn't pay for feed, so Halloran sold the painted banner that hung behind the ring, the great peacock's eye of blue and gold and fire, the one with feathers so fine you could count them from the cheap seats. The buyer drove off with it rolled on his roof rack, and Tuesday sat on the empty pole for three nights, staring at the bare patch of canvas where the eye had been.
On the fourth morning the caravans were gone and the field was bare to the hedge. Halloran walked out to the gate and found the kestrel waiting on the post, and at her feet lay one feather torn from the old banner, blue as a bruise and still glinting with gold at the tip. She had flown it back from the buyer's yard, a whole mile through the wet, and she had dropped it at his boots like a ribbon for a child.
