Wolves and feathers within a dreamcatcher

Realism · Colour · Flash

A large central wolf face looks out from a brown dreamcatcher hoop, with smaller wolves in profile and howling at the left, right and lower left. Red, white and striped feathers hang from the lower centre, and green beads sit on the hoop. The shading is soft and detailed on the fur, with warm brown and red tones and cool grey on the wolves.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The windfalls had been lying in the long grass since Tuesday, and by Saturday the wasps had found every one of them. You were on your knees in the Bramley rows with a bucket when the first wolf stepped out from the hedge, grey as wood ash, and you stayed exactly where you were, because your grandmother always said that running is what the pack expects.

The big dark one did not come closer. It sat at the gate and looked past you to the old willow hoop hanging from the pear tree, the one you strung in June with sinew, two red-tipped feathers and a green glass bead from the jar in the scullery. Its eyes were the amber of the cider in the cellar. Beside it, a smaller wolf with a silver ruff leaned its shoulder against the gatepost as though it had walked this path many times before.

You talked to them, because there was nothing else to do. You told them the fruit was ripe and the frost was late, and that the Coxes would be ready by the first of the month if the rain held off. The dark wolf lowered its head, took one apple from the bucket in its teeth and cracked it on the stone wall. The others moved along the rows, lifting the fallen fruit one by one, and the orchard filled with that sweet sour smell of bruised skin.

In the morning the bucket was empty and the gate was shut. On the step lay a single feather, striped like a hawk's tail. The hoop had been turned on its cord so that the bead faced the house. You picked up the feather, and when you turned it over you found a thread of your own hair knotted through the net, caught there in the night while you slept.
