World map outline on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a world map sits on the side of an ankle and foot. The continents are drawn in thin, unshaded black linework with no fill. A woven multicoloured thread anklet sits above the tattoo against a soft blue fabric background.

The atlas had belonged to Mr Pell, and he had left it on the hall table with its spine cracked open at the Pacific, which was how Maud knew he meant to come back for it. She went round each coast the way her father had taught her to go round a bruise, lightly at first and then with more confidence. Africa came easily, a fat shoulder turned to the east. The Americas hung off the edge of the sheet like washing, so she taped the paper down and worked in short strokes. Europe crowded into the Mediterranean and her hand kept slipping, and twice she lifted the tracing away and started over until the lines sat still.

Mr Pell came back in October, not for the atlas but for his umbrella. He found her at the window table with the sheet pinned to the glass against the grey light, and he looked over her shoulder for a long time without saying anything. "You've left them empty," he said at last. "Everyone does the first time. Fill them with what you've seen." She told him she had not seen very much. He said that was no reason to leave the insides blank, and he took his umbrella and went out into the rain.

That night she folded the tracing into her coat pocket and forgot it. In the morning she found the outline pressed faintly onto the lining, backwards, the Americas on the wrong side of the world. She stood in the hall with the coat over her arm and decided that backwards was a fair way to start leaving.
