Small fish outline tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single-line outline of a fish, the simple symbol often called the ichthys, sits on the skin of a foot. The linework is thin and even, in dark ink that appears black, with no shading or fill. Warm, close-up lighting shows the skin texture, and a hand with black nail polish with small coloured specks sits at the top of the frame.

At ten to three the lost property bag lands on the desk in the porters' cubby, and you are the one who has to tip it out. Two phone chargers, a single denture in a plastic cup, a hearing aid in a pink case, and a fish. Not a real one. A flat metal fish on a split ring, its outline drawn in one unbroken line so fine you have to tilt it under the strip light to see where it starts and stops.

Sister Okonkwo says it came off a bed in bay four, where a man who spent forty years on trawlers out of Grimsby keeps asking for his boots. Nobody has claimed it. You turn it over. Someone has scratched 1974 on the back, and beneath that, smaller, the word Tuesday.

You take it up at half past five, when the corridor windows have turned from black to the colour of dishwater. The man is awake, watching gulls on the car park roof. You hold the fish out. He does not take it straight away. He says his brother cut it from a tin lid, that they used to fish off the pier with it tied to a bit of string for luck, and that they let it go when the tide turned because you could not keep a thing like that and expect the sea to be kind.

You put it in his palm and fold his fingers over it. Down the corridor the first breakfast trolley rattles into life, and the day comes in with it, but for a minute the only thing moving in bay four is the light catching the edge of that small metal fish.
