Adventure Time characters in a heart frame

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo shows two cartoon characters from Adventure Time, Princess Bubblegum in pink on the left and Marceline with dark hair and blue skin on the right, inside an ornate red heart-shaped frame. Lumpy Space Princess, a small purple cloud creature with yellow stars, sits at the bottom of the heart. The bold black outlines and flat fills are set against the skin, with the heart centred in the frame.

Hush now, and keep your hands off the tiller, because this is the bit where the lock keeper's daughter starts to sing. She was a pale, sharp-eyed girl who lived on the Dunwater cut in a boat painted the colour of old bruises, and she could hear weather coming a day before the gulls did. Nobody on the towpath liked her much. They said she drank the damp off the bricks.

Her great friend was the Princess who ran the sugar works up at the top of the hill, a woman so pink and so precise that she corrected the ducks. Every Thursday they met on the bridge over the weir, and every Thursday they quarrelled about the same thing, which was whether a cloud could be a friend. The princess said no. The girl said her cousin Lumpy Space Princess had never once asked to be rained on, and that was more than could be said for most people.

Then the big flood came, the sort that lifts the towpath and rearranges the bargees. The sugar works were drowning and the princess was up on the roof with a clipboard. The girl did not sing that day. She floated her boat right up under the eaves, took the clipboard from her hand, and said, "You owe me an apology." The princess gave it, weeping and dripping, and the cloud, who had been sulking in the reeds all along, drifted over and sat on both their heads to keep them dry.

That is why the water stays low at Dunwater. Mind your fingers on the gate.
