The gymnasium still smelled of floor polish and bruised oranges, and Maggie Doyle stood by the squash-ball trophies for a full minute before she spotted Tom Ashworth across the trestle tables. Name badges with school photographs from 1994 had been pinned to everyone's jumpers. His had slipped sideways, so his younger face hung crooked over his heart.

They talked about the bus that no longer ran past the chip shop, and about his mother's bungalow, sold in March. Maggie kept her handbag tucked against her hip. Inside her copy of Jane Eyre, folded into quarters, was a slip of exercise book paper she had not unfolded since the spring of 1991. The words were in pencil, pressed hard: Always on my mind. Forever in my heart. Two hearts sat beneath them, one overlapping the other, the left one a little lopsided.
She held it out. Tom read it, then read it again, and his paper cup stopped halfway to his mouth. "That's not my writing," he said. "I never could do a proper loop on the g." Across the hall, beside the tea urn, Lorna Pike was waving at her with both hands, the same hands that had folded a hundred notes in double maths and sent them across the aisle.
"She did the hearts," Tom said quietly. "Every one of them." Maggie looked at the paper once more and saw the curl of the capital A, the one she had practised for hours in the back of her own jotter. She folded the note along its old creases, slid it back between the pages near the chapter where Jane leaves Thornfield, and went to find her oldest friend.
