The boat didn't come again this week, so the post is still sitting in the tin by the door with your last letter, which I have now read more times than the tide tables. Mrs Gunn says the Brightwater will try Thursday if the swell drops, but she said the same on Monday, and I watched the water from the harbour wall all afternoon with the dog pressing against my shins.

You asked whether I still count the lamps on the far rocks. I do. There are eleven when the weather is clear and nine when it isn't, and I have stopped pretending the missing two are anything but Dad's old bulbs giving up. The shop is shut for winter, so I've been baking bread for nobody and leaving the loaves on the step for the gulls, who are the only ones on the island who ask after you.

Last night I found the tin of black ink Dad used for marking the creels, and on the inside of the lid I wrote what you always said when you went off to school: always on my mind, forever in my heart. It looked silly in plain capitals, so I did it in his old copperplate with the loops running off the edge. Then I drew two hearts beside it, one a little bigger than the other, because you were always the one who wanted the larger share of the pudding.

Come home on Thursday if the boat goes. If it doesn't, I'll leave the lamp in the window and you can count it from wherever you are. Eleven, or nine. Either way, I'll be the one at the end of the wall, waiting for the smoke off the funnel.
