Script quote with two outlined hearts
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black script quote reads Always on my mind on the left and Forever in my heart on the right, with a flourish connecting the two lines. Two small outlined hearts sit to the left of the second phrase, both drawn in single black linework. The design is shown in black ink on a plain white background with no body part visible.

Mrs Hollis came into the shop on a wet Thursday with a folded sheet of greaseproof paper and one instruction: the words had to be right before anything else. She wanted them on the back window of the Mariner's Rest, the pub her husband had kept for thirty-one years, in gold leaf on black, the way the old signs were done before the council started letting people use vinyl.

I had the brushes out by ten. Pencil first, a light hand, then the long tails of the capitals I'd learned from a man in Leeds who swore by a squirrel-hair quill and nothing else. The phrase was simple enough, two lines and a flourish between them, but she stood at my shoulder and watched every stroke as though I were forging a signature. When I joined the halves with a looping stroke she made me lift the brush and start again. "He'd never have let it run on like that," she said. "He finished his sentences."
The hearts were the last thing. She took the pencil from behind my ear without asking and drew two small outlines beside the second phrase, one a touch larger than the other, the lines wobbling where her hand had stiffened. "Leave them as they are," she said. "Don't tidy them." I didn't. I've kept a photograph of that sheet pinned above the bench ever since.
The window went up on the Saturday. From the street the gold caught the grey light off the river and the words read true only from outside, which meant the regulars saw them every time they came in and never once saw them the right way round from the bar. Mrs Hollis stood across the road for a long while with her umbrella furled, reading them. Then she crossed, shook my hand, and asked whether the hearts could be done in gold as well.
