Dear Brother Osric, the nursery screen came up from the southern ports this morning, painted on seventeen panels, and the Chamberlain has ordered me to number every beast so the nurse can tell the princes which is which. Number one is a bear, round-eared and faintly cross, as if someone has interrupted his nap. Number two is a fennec fox whose ears are so large they might be sails, though the Chamberlain insists they are ears and that I am not to argue with a man who owns a carriage.

Three is a raccoon in a stolen mask, four a tiger who has been told about his whiskers, five a red panda peeking over a wall it has no business peering over. Six is a badger with a white stripe like a parting, seven a koala, eight a sloth who has reconsidered everything. Nine is a penguin in a hurry. Mistress Hale, who keeps the linen, has decided the snail at sixteen is surrendering to the hippo at seventeen, who has been glaring at it since midsummer, and she will not be contradicted.

Mistress Hale also asked which beast I thought the youngest prince would like best. I said the owl, for its eyes, and she said that was the wrong answer, because the owl looks as if it is about to report us. So I have gone with the hedgehog at thirteen, which bristles at everyone yet holds perfectly still for the whole picture. The princes will fight over the fox at fourteen, and the groundhog at fifteen will be mistaken for a loaf by the end of the month.

Write back and tell me which you would pick. I suspect the hippo, since he at least looks as though he has been waiting all summer for someone to say something. Your loving sister, Agnes.
