Basset hound with red flower on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A basset hound with droopy ears and a black nose sits in the centre, holding a red flower with a dark centre in its mouth. The body and ears are filled with ornate, fine black linework and dotted patterns, with the eyes and nose left as bold solid shapes. Black and grey ink dominates the design, with the red flower as the only colour, set against pale skin.

Along the Salt Wire road, where the tarmac gave out and the sand took over, a basset hound called Marrow Tom walked every morning behind the water cart. His ears dragged so low they swept the dust into little dunes. The drivers said he could smell rain a week off, which was a lie, because it had not rained at Pell Wells in nine years.

One afternoon a lorry stopped at the crossroads and a girl climbed down with a tin trunk and no shoes. She asked the way to Hesper Mine. Tom sat in front of her and looked at her for a long while. Then he went off the road into the scrub and came back with a single red flower clamped in his jaws, its dark heart already bruised by the heat. He dropped it at her feet and sneezed.
Nobody at the mine had seen a flower in years. The girl's father had gone down the shaft in the spring and not come up, and the foreman still kept his cap on a nail in the office. She held the flower to her nose and found it smelled of nothing at all, which made her laugh until she cried. The hound lay down in the shade of her trunk and did not get up again.
They buried him under the iron wheel at the crossroads. Every spring after that, a red bloom came up through the sand beside the wheel, and the drivers slowed the lorries to look at it before they drove on.
