The moustache had come off again, the third time since breakfast, and Mrs Pruitt held it up to the light from the door as if it might explain itself. The spud beneath it stood on the counter in his blue shoes, arms on his hips, regarding her with the mild disappointment of a man kept waiting at the station.

He had arrived in a jumble box of loose plastic eyes, pipe cleaners and one dented tin trumpet, which a boy had bought for fifty pence because he wanted the trumpet. Nobody wanted the spud. Mrs Pruitt found him at the bottom, wedged against a bag of marbles, and spent a wet Saturday gluing his ears back on with a tube that smelled of pear drops.

"You're not going on the pile," she told him. He glared, which she took as agreement. She fetched the little pot of black paint from under the till and a box of brass pins, and fixed the moustache back where it belonged. It sat a fraction lopsided, like a man who had come straight from a wedding and not quite finished his tie.

A woman came in asking whether the trumpet was still for sale. Mrs Pruitt said it was, but the gentleman on the counter was not. When the woman looked at him, she found herself smiling at a potato in a bowler hat, the moustache trembling in the draught from the door, and she left with the trumpet under one arm and no idea why she had wanted it.
