Small cat face tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small cat face is tattooed on the inner wrist of a raised arm, showing black and grey markings on the fur, pink inner ears and nose, and pale green eyes. The linework is thin and clean, with soft shading on the cheeks and whiskers drawn in fine grey lines. The tattoo sits centrally on the pale skin against a dark blurred background, and a black and white checked sleeve is visible below it.

The cat had walked across the Psalter again, leaving a line of wet ink from the tail of a capital S to the corner of the page, and I was too cross to be sorry. Brother Osric said the beast was a familiar, sent to test the patience of scribes. I told him the beast was a cat, and cats do not test anything. They simply sit where the light is best.

The abbot had ordered Saint Aldhelm for the feast of the translation, a stern bishop with a crozier and a face like a dropped loaf. I had drawn him three times, and each time he looked like a man who had lost a wager. Compline, as we called her for the hour she preferred to sleep on the sill, came and sat on my pricking board, black from ear to shoulder with a white bib and a blaze down her nose, and watched me with eyes the green of new pond weed.
On the fourth morning I gave up on the bishop. I painted the cat instead, in the lower margin, where scribes hide the things they love and the abbot never looks: two pointed ears lined inside with the pink we used for the initials, whiskers drawn in grey so fine a breath would move them, and a small mouth set in its permanent expression of mild disappointment in me.
Abbot Wulfric found it at Vespers and came close with his spectacles pushed up. He said nothing for a long while. Then he said that Aldhelm had never looked so much like himself as he did tonight, and that the cat would stay in the margin for as long as the book did. Compline sat on the sill and washed one paw, pleased with the arrangement.
