Black cat silhouette with paw prints on ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a cat sitting in profile, facing left, with small blue accents for the eyes. Three black paw prints trail diagonally up from above the cat's head towards the top left of the frame. The black ink is dense and uniform with a slightly textured fill, set against lightly toned skin with the blue eyes providing the only colour.

Sit down, sit down, the broth is still hot and nobody leaves this table until I have finished. You want the cat or you want the bride's dance? They happened on the same day, so you will have both.

The Morrow house had a black cat called Sable who would not come in from the rain for anybody, and on the morning of the wedding she sat on the church wall with her back to the lych-gate and her blue eyes fixed on the road. Nobody had let her out. The vicar's wife found a line of small wet prints across the flagstones of the nave, each one perfect, running up the aisle to the altar rail and then turning round, as if someone had walked to the front to see who was coming and thought better of it.

Sable never liked men in good shoes. When the groom's uncle stepped up to read, she leapt onto the pew beside him, sat down, and began to wash one ear, very slowly, until the whole congregation was laughing and he had lost his place in the psalm. He never found it again, so the bride read it for him, and she read it loud enough for the hills to hear.

The prints led out of the door and down the hill into the barley, and that is where they stop. In the morning the new husband went out to the step with the milk and found the saucer already licked clean and three small prints pressed into the frost, pointing back up towards the churchyard. Sable was sitting on the wall again, watching the road, waiting for the next wedding.
