Blue cat head tattoo with yellow-green eyes

Other · Colour · Photo

A close-up of a cat's head in a blocky, painterly style, with the cat's face angled towards the viewer. The ears and muzzle are built from patches of black, dark blue and bright turquoise, with white whisker lines and round yellow-green eyes. A soft green wash sits behind the head, and fine dark outlines extend across the surrounding skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper went blind in the left eye the winter the boats stopped coming, so it fell to me to watch the rocks at night. I did it from the sill of the lamp room, where the glass threw my shape back at me in blue and black, a cat cut from the dark in pieces. Nobody on the mainland ever saw me that way. They only saw the light turning.

The green came from the moss on the seaward wall, which the keeper called his garden and which I thought a poor sort of garden, all damp and no birds. Still, it was the only green on the island, so I kept an eye on it. In March a girl rowed out from Carrick Vaun with a tin of paint and a question about her brother's ship. She painted the wall that day, the light-house wall, in patches of turquoise and slate, and she painted me too, sitting on the step with my ears up and my whiskers out, as though I were the reason for the whole business.

When the ship did come home it came in on the one clear night, and the keeper swung the lamp round and round so the captain would see the rocks. I watched from the sill. I counted the flashes, one for each stone, and the girl's brother was on the deck, waving a hat. Afterwards the keeper said the cat had brought them in. I let him believe it. A cat's eyes are yellow-green at night for a reason, and the reason is that somebody has to look.
