Blue heart outline with dot and dash line on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A simple heart outline is inked in blue on pale skin, with a gap at the top where the line ends and begins again. Inside the lower left of the heart sits a diagonal row of black dots and short parallel dashes. The blue line is smooth and even, while the black marks are sharper and evenly spaced against a plain background.

The clerk from the post office came up the garden path with his cap in both hands, and Dorothy knew from the way he stopped at the rhubarb that the news would not be read out loud. He had written the signal in pencil, dot and dash, exactly as the wireless man on the freighter had sent it before the water took the aerial. Dorothy had learned Morse in 1916 so she could follow the dance tunes in the village hall, and she could still read it slowly, her lips moving.

She sat on the bench under the apple tree and worked it out letter by letter while the clerk pretended to admire the sweet peas. Most of it was plain. The last word broke off halfway through, a long stroke with no dot after it, and then nothing but the hiss of a line that no longer carried anything.
She did not cry. She fetched a ball of twine from the shed and pegged out a heart on the bare earth by the south wall, its point towards the gate and its top left open where the path came in, so that anyone walking up could step straight through. Then she knelt and pressed in the grape hyacinth bulbs Walter had bought in March, one for every letter she had managed to read.
By June the blue would be up. The gap at the top would still be open where the path came in, and Dorothy would still be leaving it that way for whoever came up the garden next.
