Bride tribe script with diamond on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a forearm and wrist with a gold metallic temporary tattoo. The brush script reads bride tribe, with a small outlined diamond sitting above the word bride. The gold lettering is solid and evenly filled against a plain, softly lit light background.

The packet promised the gold would last the weekend, so nobody thought to test it on the Thursday. By Saturday lunchtime, on the coach out to Scarrow Bay, Marnie had lost her second word to a flapping window and was scraping what was left of the tribe off with a wet wipe and a lot of language. Nobody had considered what sea air would do to a sticker, or to a group of women who had been awake since five.

Janine, the bride, took it as a sign. She had been taking everything as a sign since Easter, when the florist spelled her surname wrong on the table plan and the caterer's van broke down on the A65. She sat on the sea wall with her chin in her hands while the others argued about whether the little diamond could be saved. It could not. It came away in one piece and stuck to Aunt Doreen's cardigan, where it stayed through the fish suppers and the drizzle, catching the light at anyone who leaned in to look.
Doreen had been married three times and had never once been a member of anything she didn't choose. She had come on the coach because nobody had been able to say no to her, and she carried in her handbag a sheet of transfers left over from her own second wedding, bought from a catalogue that had since gone under. She peeled one off, pressed it into Janine's palm, and told her to stop staring at the sea as if it owed her money.
Janine laughed for the first time all day. By the time the coach pulled out, she had the word bride on her hand, Doreen had the diamond on her cardigan, and the rest of them had swapped their sensible shoes for the sea wall without anyone asking why.
