The stamps came in a bag of forty from a shop in Leeds, each one a foil sheet you wet with a sponge and peel back. Marisol insisted on Team Bride everywhere, even on the petrol receipt. Now she sits in the back with her veil folded across her knees, reading the map upside down and calling the road a shortcut. It is not a shortcut. It is a long grey ribbon that bends into the heat and comes out the other side looking exactly the same.
By the time the little heart on the dashboard catches the light, the water bottles are warm and the phone has no signal. You pull onto the verge beside a rusted sign for a town that no longer exists. Marisol climbs out in her trainers, laughing, and presses her own lips to the windscreen, leaving a perfect gold mark that the sun turns to fire. Nadia says it looks like a crime scene. You say it looks like a beacon. A lorry passes and sounds its horn twice, as if it knows exactly where you are going.
