Carrot tattoo on the ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small carrot with a green leafy top and thin roots is the sole subject, with the letter V set within the orange body. The carrot has a bold black outline, flat orange and green fills, and darker orange shading along its length. The design is centred on a pale lower leg against a blurred grey background.

The year the frost came in April, my uncle Ferris lost his whole row of early carrots, and he swore on his mother's grave he'd grow one that could outlast the weather. So he sowed a single seed in the bottom of the old chapel yard, where the wall keeps the wind off, and he talked to it every evening like a man talking to a horse he doesn't trust. By August it had put out a top as green and frilled as a lady's petticoat, and the root was pushing down through the flagstones like it had somewhere to be.

Nobody in Harrowgate believed him when he said it would lift clean. They came to watch, the way they'd come to a hanging. My cousin Dilys brought a spade and a pie. Ferris got down on his knees, took hold of the leaves, and pulled, and the whole thing came up with a sound like a cork leaving a bottle, orange as a sunset and nearly as long as his arm. Dilys dropped the pie.
On its side, where the sun could reach it, we saw somebody had scratched a letter into the crown in the old way, with a nail, a V cut clean and dark. Ferris said that was for Verity, his wife, who had been dead eleven years and never once let him finish a sentence. He carried the carrot home under his coat, and it was the only thing he ever grew that she didn't tell him was crooked.
