Cartoon cat reading a green book
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat character with a lilac bow and round glasses sits reading an open green book, surrounded by stacked books and three outlined pink hearts. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading in blue-grey and a pale wash of pink behind the figure. The design is centred on a close crop of skin, with a dark waistband along the bottom edge of the frame.

The mobile library lurched on the third hairpin of the Bwlch, and the box of returns slid across the floor towards Dilys's boots. She caught it with one foot and kept her eyes on the single lane ahead, where the drystone wall gave way to nothing but a long drop and a sky the colour of wet slate.

Her son had fitted a new radio that morning, and it had found only static since Caerfelin. She didn't need it. She knew the route the way she knew the spine of a battered paperback, by feel. Eleven stops. Four were farms where the only reader was a man called Huw, who ordered westerns and returned them unread. Two were schools with a handful of children who came for the picture books with green covers, the ones about a small grey cat who lost her umbrella in every chapter.
At the summit lay the lay-by, where she always stopped to eat a sandwich and watch the cloud lift off the reservoir. Today a girl was waiting on the wall, a satchel on her knees and a library card held out between two fingers like a ticket. She had walked up from the village alone, and the card said she was nine.
"You're late," the girl said. "I've finished the one about the cat."
Dilys took the card and stamped it, then handed over the next book from the stack, which was lighter than the rest because nobody had opened it yet. The girl bent over the page at once and didn't look up until the wind dropped and the cloud came down over the pass again.
