Cartoon cat with crossed knife and number 13
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon cat face with a wide open mouth showing fangs sits at the centre of the design, with whiskers drawn in bold black outline. A knife crosses beneath the chin and the number 13 sits above the left ear, with small red drops scattered around the image. The cat is shaded in greys with bold black linework, and the red accents add the only colour against the pale skin and blurred background.

The cat was waiting on the bench at platform 13 when Maureen Pask came through with her mop bucket at ten past two. Platform 13 had been shut since 1974, a rumour the rail company never bothered to correct, so she said good evening to it the way she said good evening to the pigeons. It did not look like a pigeon. It was grey and sharp-eared, with a wide mouth full of fangs, and a bread knife lay across the slats in front of it, set out neatly like cutlery on a café table. Three red spots freckled the tiles beside it.

"Shoo," she said. The cat opened its mouth wider, which she took for a yawn, then stood and walked off down the platform with its tail up, stopping every few steps to check she was following. She followed, because the alternative was the night manager's sigh over the radio. It led her to lost property, a cupboard behind the kiosk with a hatch nobody had opened since the Jubilee, and sat on the counter beside the ledger as if it had an appointment.
The ledger was open at a page headed 13. Under a date in 1968, in faded biro, someone had written: umbrella, brass key, one glove, carving knife, unclaimed. Maureen had never read that far back. The cat put one paw on the word knife and pushed the book towards her with exaggerated patience, as though she were the slow one.
When she went back for her bucket, the knife had gone and the red spots had become a line of small paw prints leading to the hatch. In the morning the ledger had a new entry under the old one, in handwriting she did not remember using: Cat, one, claimed.
