Realism style tattoo of a frowning face in round glasses and a red beanie, with lettering curved around it, on a lower leg.

Bespectacled face in red beanie on a calf

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A shaded portrait of a man's face wearing round wire-framed glasses and a red knitted beanie with a pompom, with a pouting, unimpressed expression. Black text in a plain lettering style curves around the face in a circular arc. The face is rendered in greys with fine hatching, while the beanie is the only area of strong colour, set against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Hollin Fell road by four, and by six you had counted the guests twice: three walkers drying socks on the radiator, a salesman from Carlisle apologising to his shoes, and Dorothy Pask's nephew asleep in the boot room. You were behind the bar working out the week's takings on a beer mat when the cat came in under the kitchen door, soaked to the whiskers, with a sardine lid stuck to one paw.

Nobody had claimed it. Dorothy came down the back stairs in her red bobble hat, took one look at the animal dripping on her flagstones, and pronounced that this was no place for a kitty. "Outhouse," she said, already reaching for the boiler key. "Cold, but it's dry." So you carried it across the yard, the wind slapping the lantern, and wedged it in among the logs and the old mangle. It sat there looking at you with the offended patience of a bailiff.

Ten minutes later the pipes began to knock and Dorothy wanted the hot water back on, so you went out again with a torch and a saucer of milk you were not supposed to be spending. The cat was on the bar when you came back in, having walked through the kitchen while you were gone, and it had settled itself on top of the takings with the calm of a creature who had already won. Dorothy saw it, opened her mouth, closed it again, and put the kettle on.

Nobody mentions the outhouse now. The salesman has started calling the cat Carlisle, and the mangle has a folded tea towel for a bed.
