A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cheese had already slid off the board by the time Lucia reached the bakehouse, pooling gold across the flagstones of Morrevale, a kingdom where the Queen's bread was treated as a matter of state. Her uncle stood over the great oven with a peel in one hand and a scowl that could curdle milk. 'Three nights you have wasted my flour,' he said. 'Tonight the Queen eats, or we all hang from the gate.'

Lucia didn't argue. She slapped the dough into a flat round, tore a fistful of salted pepperoni from the string hanging by the door, and laid the coins of it in a spiral, the way her grandmother had done in the hill village before the king's men came. The crust blistered and browned at the rim like a scorched sail. Her uncle watched with his arms folded and said nothing when she pulled it out in one swift motion, the cheese bubbling and running down the sides in long, glossy tongues.

The royal herald arrived at dusk with a ribbon-bound scroll and read the decree aloud in a voice that cracked on the long words. The Queen wanted the food that tasted of home. Lucia stepped forward with a slice on a tin plate, her fingers sticky and her heart loud in her ears. The Queen took one bite, closed her eyes, and was quiet for so long that the guards began to shift their feet.

When she opened her eyes, she tore a strip of white silk from her sleeve and tied it around the crust like a banner. 'That's amore,' she said, and the whole courtyard let out its breath at once.
