Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a shaded dog face in profile-leaning view, with pointed ears, a dark nose and eyes drawn in fine lines. Surrounding the face are short handwritten-style words in black ink, including wow, so ink, much art, such rebl and mom proud. The image is shown in black ink and grey tones against pale skin, with a denim trouser leg above and a sock below.

The ring cushion is already in the dog's mouth when you turn round from the register table. Biscuit is sitting at the end of the front pew with a bow tie strangled around his neck and the exact expression of a husky who has concluded the whole ceremony was arranged for his benefit. The vicar is on her third 'beloved'. Somewhere behind you, a child is asking whether dogs get married too.

You were meant to keep him in the car. That was the plan, agreed over three pints in the Crown on Tuesday, alongside the speech you have not written and the question of whether the bride's nan can be trusted with the confetti cannon. Biscuit has eyes the colour of old pennies and opinions about everything. Such ring, he seems to think. Very vows. By the second hymn you are fairly sure he understands the service better than the organist.
When the vicar asks for the rings, the dog stands, trots to the altar with the cushion held high, and drops it at the groom's polished shoes. The ribbon has been chewed through. The rings are gone. A long silence follows, broken only by the groom saying, quite calmly, 'Oh, we've got a dog.' You look at the dog. The dog looks at the bride's nan, who is already reaching into her handbag for a packet of mints.
Afterwards, the dog is found under the reception table, sitting on the bride's train, with a gold band in each paw like a bored pirate. Your sister's mum is dabbing her eyes in the corner. 'Look at him,' she says, to nobody in particular, and the words come out so thick with pride that you know she will be telling this story for the rest of her life. Mum proud. Very proud. Much wedding.
