The hadrosaurs had been practising their bellow since breakfast, and Pim the brachiosaurus still could not manage a sound louder than a kettle coming to the boil. Her neck reached the top of the tallest ginkgo, which made her the best lookout in the valley and the worst at frightening anyone. When the old bull Harrick thundered past the lake telling the herd to keep in line, Pim opened her mouth wide and produced a squeak that drifted up through the leaves and came back down as a sneeze.

Her friend Dottie, a stubby ankylosaur with strong opinions, sat on a fallen log chewing a fern. 'Roar it from your heart,' she said. 'Everybody says that.' 'Which heart?' asked Pim, because she suspected it mattered. Dottie rolled her eyes so hard her plates rattled. So Pim sat very still and thought about warm mud, cold river water, and the way the sun came through the canopy in gold coins. Then she thought about Dottie, who had walked her home every evening since the flood.

When the storm rolled over the ridge that night, a fox yelped through the ferns and a small creature cried for its mother somewhere beyond the water. Pim lifted her head above the trees, filled her long throat with air, and let out a sound so low and sweet that the lake trembled. It was not a roar. It was closer to a purr that had grown up. Nothing in the valley moved until the little creature stopped crying and started laughing.

Next morning Harrick grumbled that it had been no proper roar at all. Dottie said it was the most ridiculous noise she had ever heard, and she said it kindly. Pim did not mind. She had discovered what her roar was for, and the herd discovered it too, which was that a heart could be loud without being fierce.
