Cartoon dinosaur with RAWR and a heart

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon brontosaurus with a round head, large eye and dark outline stands beside a pink heart and the word RAWR in dark capital letters. The outlined linework is simple and bold, with soft blue, green and yellow shading filling the body. The design sits centrally on the skin against a warm, dimly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo's grandson had been promised a brontosaurus for his seventh birthday, and the promise had come due on a Tuesday when the rain was coming sideways over Peckham Rye. Nobody in the flat above the chip shop believed a dinosaur could be bought, so Dev fetched the biggest cardboard box from behind the bins and drew on it with a felt pen. The head came out round as a dinner plate. The neck went up like a periscope. He gave it one enormous eye, because that was how the beasts in his comics looked at you before they ate your sandwiches.

By midnight the box was lying across the bus shelter outside the launderette, and the dinosaur, which had somehow got its colours from the wet blue sky and the green glow of the chip shop sign, had stepped out of it and was standing in the road looking embarrassed. It was smaller than promised. It was also very hungry. A taxi driver swerved, a fox sat down to watch, and the dinosaur opened its mouth and gave a roar that came out as a thin, polite RAWR, hanging over the rooftops in dark letters that refused to drift away.

Dev ran after it with a bag of cold chips held out like a peace offering. The dinosaur took the bag, considered him for a long moment, then lowered its enormous head and, with great dignity, pressed a small pink heart into his palm before wandering off towards the river. Mrs Okonedo still keeps that heart in a biscuit tin. She says it is the only dinosaur in London that ever paid for its supper.
