Cartoon dog and fox on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The photo is a two-panel view of a wrist with bold cartoon tattoos. The left panel shows a brown dog with large eyes and a white muzzle sitting beside an orange leaf, with a faint grey tattoo at the top edge. The right panel shows an orange fox with a white-tipped tail peeking over a green-shaded wooden post, with an orange leaf below. The outlines are thick and black, with flat, solid colour fills and simple shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Bartholomew the basset had sat by the leaning gate of Crowmere Castle for three days, waiting for the fox to come back and apologise for the sausage. The castle was more gap than keep now. Ivy had taken the great hall, and the portcullis hung by one chain that creaked whenever the wind came off the moor.

On the fourth morning a russet head appeared over the old well post, followed by a tail with a white tip that waved like a flag of surrender. Reynard Fitch did not apologise. He never had. He simply sat down on the post, licked a paw and looked at the dog with the expression of someone who had already won the argument.

"You owe me a sausage," said Bartholomew.

"I owe you nothing. You dropped it. I found it. That is how sausages work." Reynard tipped his head to one side. "Besides, you were staring at the sky. Dogs who stare at the sky lose their dinners to foxes. Everyone knows this."

A maple leaf came spinning down between them, orange as a lit coal, and settled on the flagstones. Bartholomew watched it land. He thought of the kitchen at the bottom of the hill, where the cook had once laughed at him for being too soft to growl at the postman. He thought of the sausage, which had been very good.

He stood up, shook his ears and trotted to the post. Reynard leaned down, grinning, and offered him the other half of a sausage he had been hiding under the leaf the whole time.
