Four turtle heads across fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

A clenched fist shows four small cartoon turtle heads, one on each finger, in full colour with bold dark outlines. Each turtle wears a differently coloured bandana in blue, red, grey and orange, and the green skin is shaded with simple highlights. The tattoos are evenly spaced across the knuckle side of the fingers against a plain warm yellow wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the cold is in the bottle yet. You want the four shell brothers? Everybody on Route Nine knows them, though most won't own it before noon. Old Abel Tripp swore they climbed out of the wash below Cutter's Mesa the summer the river quit, four green fellows no taller than a fence post, each tied up in a different rag so the others could tell them apart in a dust storm.

Blue was the eldest and talked the most, which is how you knew he'd been wrong twice before lunch. Red was quick with his fists and quicker with his apologies. Grey kept the map folded in his knot, and orange was the youngest, who wanted nothing but to be the one who found the good water. They drove a rust-bitten pickup with no doors and a radio that only picked up hymns.

One afternoon a wall of dust rolled over the highway and swallowed them whole. Blue hollered directions, Red hollered back, and nobody saw the cattle grid until the wheels hit it. Grey pulled the map from his knot, tied it round orange's wrist because orange had the thinnest shell and was likeliest to be blown clean off the road, then sat very still. When the wind dropped, all four were sat on the centre line with the sun coming through the grit like a lamp, and the only thing still moving was the map.

Grey never got the map back. He said he'd never needed it, the other three were the map, and that's the story Abel always finished with. So if you're out past the cattle grid at dusk, look for four green heads poking out of the dust. They'll wave. Wave back, mind. They're proud of that.
