Cartoon girl, striped cat and pastel flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a smiling cartoon girl with blonde hair and a bunny-eared hood, framed by pink flowers with smiling faces and green leaves. A striped purple cat wearing round glasses sits in the lower right, with a striped tail curling across the design. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft pastel pink, purple, green and blue fills, and the design is shown in two close-up panels.

The snow had shut Caddon Pass three weeks early, and the apothecary's boy still had not come back over it. Tilda pulled her bunny-eared hood tight and climbed to the cairn where the old road began, because somebody had to. Pell came with her, as he always did, picking his way over the drifts with his striped tail held high like a banner. A tinker had left him a pair of round spectacles in the autumn, and he peered through them at the snow as if it had personally disappointed him.

Halfway up, wild pinks began to show through the white. They were no bigger than thimbles, and each had a face, round and pleased, the way a child draws the sun. 'They're smiling at us,' Tilda said. 'They're smiling at the road,' said Pell. 'That's different.' Where the flowers faced, the snow was only a hand deep. Where they did not, it came up to her knee. So she followed the faces.
The boy was sitting against a boulder above the drop, his lips blue, the medicine wrapped inside his coat. He had waited since morning because nobody had told him the flowers only turned to show the path when the light went low. Tilda gave him bread and her own flask, and Pell took off his spectacles and polished them on his tail, which he said was the only sensible way to see anything in such cold.
They came down with the lamps lit, the boy walking between them. On the last bend Tilda looked back and saw the pinks still turned towards the pass, a hillside of small round faces, waiting for whoever was lost next.
