Cartoon kitten with pink bow on lower abdomen

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon kitten character with a large pink bow and rounded ears has a green, Yoda-like head and a brown robed body. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft green and brown shading on the head and body and pink tones on the bow. The design is centred on a smooth patch of skin, with denim visible along the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe what came off the Tuesday boat with the paraffin. Mr Tennant swore the crate was marked fish, and when Aggie prised the lid we found a kitten no bigger than a loaf, with ears like a pair of open umbrellas and a pink bow the size of a kipper tied on its head. Its face was green. Not sickly green, mind, but the proper deep green of wet moss, and it had a little nub of a nose that looked like a button somebody had sewn on wrong.

It wore a brown robe, belted with cord, and it would not be parted from a walking stick it had found in the crate. Tennant wanted to put it in the harbour. Aggie fed it sardines and it sat there, very solemn, and said nothing for a whole afternoon. Then it said, quite clearly, "Wait, you must." We all took a step back.

Since then it has been the sensible one. The gulls that raid the bins now queue on the wall to be told off. Tennant has stopped swearing, because the kitten corrects him, slowly, and he has begun to listen. Last night I found it on the harbour wall with its stick across its knees, watching the light sweep the water, and it looked round at me and said, "Much to learn, you still have." I told it I had been keeping this lighthouse since before it was a crate. It bowed its green head so the bow sagged over one eye and said nothing more.

I have decided it can stay. Come over at the end of the month and meet it. Bring tinned peaches, it has opinions about the sardines.

Love, Ruth
