Cartoon panda in oversized glasses
Black and grey · Flash
A cartoon panda lies on its side wearing oversized black-framed glasses, with its eyes looking out from behind the lenses. Bold dark outlines and soft grey shading define the black ears, eye patches and muzzle against the white body and a dark ground shadow. The drawing sits centred on a cream background with a dark vignette border.

The panda had been lying on the harbour wall since Tuesday, and by Thursday half of Carrick Holm had stopped pretending he wasn't there. He had arrived on the last ferry from Oban in a crate marked lost property, and he had helped himself to a pair of black-framed spectacles from the top of the pile, big enough to hold a wedding photograph. Nobody saw him put them on. They were simply on him one morning, slid down his nose, and he was looking out at the water with the air of someone who had finally got the measure of things.

Morag Pell ran the post office from the front room of her cottage, and she was the one who went down to the wall with a bag of sugared almonds and a sensible voice. 'Those aren't yours,' she said. The panda considered this. He rolled onto his back, then onto his side again, and tipped his head so the lenses caught the sun. She sat beside him on the cold stone and found she was tired of being sensible.
The letter was in her coat pocket. She had written it four times for her brother in Oban, who had not answered the last two, and each draft had ended up in the bin under the counter. 'Go on, then,' she told the panda, and held it out. He took it in both paws and read it through the thick glass, frowning at every full stop. When he handed it back, the envelope was damp at one corner, the way things go when someone has been holding them too carefully.
She walked up to the post office with a stamp between her teeth. On the way she passed the lost property crate, now empty, and the wall, where a dark patch of shadow was all that remained of him. The glasses had been left folded on the stone, one arm pointing at the ferry as if somebody had only just stepped off to meet it.
