You are the apprentice who inherits the ink-pot of the Royal Mapmaker of Carrowmere, a kingdom that appears on no map, and your first commission is a wall in the palace kitchens that nobody asked for. The cook wants mice. Not the grey ones that gnaw the flour, she says, but the round-eared kind from the picture books her grandmother sold on the quay.

You draw them in solid black and leave the faces white, the way the old seal-cutters did, so the lamplight from the scullery door can find them. One mouse wears a polka-dot skirt and a bow the size of a moth. The other wears trousers with two buttons and a sprawling, careless hand. The steward, who believes there will be no kissing in Carrowmere until after the harvest, sees the wall on the third morning and orders it scraped.

That night you go down with a lamp and a stiff brush. The scraping stops halfway because the mice have leaned in. Their noses meet at the seam where your first stroke crossed the mortar. In the doorway the steward's lantern shakes. The scullery clock ticks once, then twice, and the plaster around the two faces goes soft and dark as wet ink.

In the morning the wall is bare except for two small black shapes on the flagstones beneath the table, holding hands, and the cook is sweeping carefully around them.
