Cartoon pig with stitches and a knife

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon pig sits with its front paws raised, with stitch marks across its head, a knife stuck in the top of its head, and a pink organ-like shape showing through a cut in its belly. Bold black outlines define the figure, with flat pink and red fills, soft shading and glossy highlights. Red blood drips and pools around its feet and a second cut-out piece on the left, all set against a plain background of skin.

Dear Auntie Mab,

The pig is sitting up again on the kitchen windowsill, and I have stopped trying to put it back in the bin. You will say I am soft. Rhys from the mill says it is only a toy and the stitches are cosmetic, but he has never seen Dilys try to feed it a cup of tea. It sits there with its paws up like a man waiting for a bus, the bread knife still wedged in the top of its head where she left it on Tuesday, and it does not seem to mind.

Mum says the wool trade has made everyone odd out here. Maybe so. Past the stile where the path gives up, there is an old smokehouse the Pritchard boys used before they moved to Carmarthen, and I found the pig's sister in there on Thursday, perched on a sack of barley with its belly open and a little pink lung tucked inside like a sweet in its paper. I did not touch it. I walked home and told nobody except the cat, who was sensible about it and went out.

Dilys is nine. She says the pig is going to the party in the village hall on Saturday, and that the red on its feet is only jam. I checked the jam jar. It is still full, so I suppose she is telling the truth in the way children do.

I am going up to the stile in the morning with a bucket and a great deal of nerve. If the sister has gone too, I will assume she has gone to join the others at the party, and I will have to bring a cake.

Love, Nessa
