Cartoon tiger and boy on ankles

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a woman's lower legs in black strappy heels. A large orange and black striped cartoon tiger leaps down the shin, and a small cartoon boy with yellow spiky hair and a red top stands on the top of the foot below it. Bold dark outlines and flat colour fills give a playful, illustrative finish, and a second ankle at the left shows a partly visible line of text tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boy came down to the orchard every evening in the last week of August, when the early windfalls had gone soft in the long grass and the wasps were drunk on them. He carried a tin bucket with a hole in the base and a spoon in his pocket, because his mother said a boy who was going to be idle should at least be useful about it. The tiger had been living in the lower rows since midsummer. Nobody in Hollin End had seen it, but everybody knew, because the hens stopped laying and the old dog would not go past the gate.

He found it on the seventh evening, asleep on the wall with one orange paw hanging over the stones like a dropped glove. Its stripes were black as tar and it smelled of crushed mint. The boy sat down on the bucket and waited. After a while the tiger opened one eye, looked at him the way a shopkeeper looks at a child with a coin, and said, 'You are late. The apples fall without you.'

They ate windfalls until the sun was a red coin behind the church. The tiger told him which trees had been bitten by frost and which had been planted by a man who wanted his name remembered, and the boy told the tiger what his father had said about the price of cider. Neither of them mentioned the lane, or the tall cart that came up it each Friday with its lamps lit, though both had been thinking of it.

When the cart came that Friday, the boy stood in the gap of the hedge with the bucket full and his heart going like a hammer. The tiger walked out past him, slow and striped, and sat down in the middle of the road. The driver laughed, then stopped laughing, then turned the cart around without a word. The boy emptied the bucket into the grass one apple at a time, and went home with his shoes full of seeds.
